Mahaiwe Theater was built by a syndicate in 1905 at the height of the vaudeville era. Veteran actor DeWolf Hopper starred in its first show and the building's architect James McA. Vance appeared in the second. In the 1920s the theater's manager was instrumental in luring a movie crew to South Berkshire; another enterprise, however, "Foxy Grandpa," turned out to be a sham.
This wonderful book highlights a truly special Berkshire cultural gem: Jacob's Pillow. Jacob's Pillow is the home of America's longest-running dance festival, celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2007.

This is the first book to recount the story of the simple wooden structure that went on to Woodstock-era fame after its deconsecration and what that building meant to the communities it served. On the surface, it may seem that an Episcopalian congregation from turn of the century New England has little in common with the rebellious youths in the movie AliceÅfs Resaurant. Yet there is much they share.
This is the story of Tanglewood as told in first-person accounts by such luminaries as Leonard Bernstein, Serge Koussevitzky, Aaron Copland, Erich Leinsdorf, Seiji Ozawa, Yo-Yo Ma, James Levine, and many other leading musicians, critics and music professionals who consider Tanglewood a second home. This “documentary coffee-table book” features letters, speeches, interviews, vintage newspaper articles and a treasure trove of photographs from the BSO’s archives, all woven together by Ms. Daniel’s narrative and commentary.
